Producing a groundbreaking event for Columbia College Chicago’s historic new student center

Project: Columbia College Chicago was ready to break ground on its first student center in the college’s 127-year history. They turned to Resolute to produce this important event, manage media relations and create a video that captured the transformative power of the new student center – yet to be built.
Strategy: Today, the corner of 8th and Wabash in Chicago is just an empty lot. But on November 13, Resolute had to transform the corner – the future home of the student center – into a place of celebration. The attendance of Mayor Rahm Emanuel was a high priority and Resolute coordinated with the Mayor’s Office on selecting a day when the Mayor could attend. Our team met extensively with Columbia’s Communications team to create a work plan for the event. Managing permits, tents, safety, seating, sound, television monitors, and ceremonial shovels was all part of the plan. Resolute developed talking points for all the speakers and rehearsed roles and responsibilities with everyone, including two student speakers.
Resolute’s media relations team developed news alerts and releases for the event.
Resolute’s creative team developed the electronic invite, signage, and program. The team also created a video that showcased the stunning building designed by Gensler Chicago. The video also showcased Columbia’s student talent with Da’Nelle Grier providing the narration, Curtis Koch handling the sound and Columbia alumni Steve Melin composing the soundtrack.
Outcome: “The new Student Center is built around the ideas and inspired work of our students,” said Dr. Kwang-Wu Kim, president and CEO of Columbia College Chicago who welcomed Mayor Emanuel, local community organizations, and Columbia trustees, faculty and students to the groundbreaking. “This new student center is a commitment to Columbia students, and an investment in the cultural and creative youth in Chicago,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “I am thrilled that Columbia is building a brand-new 21st century hub for its students to help them prepare for success in our 21st century world.”
Nearly every news outlet covered the event several ran stories that night and the following day. The Columbia community was thrilled with the event and everyone was extremely complementary about the video – especially because it featured the talent of Columbia students.
